It also lies on the Durham Coast Line to Middlesbrough and the Tyne Valley Line to Carlisle. The station has a staffed ticket office although passengers should note that it is not open in the late evening. Passengers are able to collect tickets purchased in advance (for example, on the internet) from one of the automatic ticket machines located in the station.

Facilities at the station include ATM's, First Class Lounge, pay phones, public wifi, cafes and shops, toilets and baby changing facilities.

These stations are Gilesgate in the city which was closed in the 1850's, Shincliffe Town in nearby Shincliffe which was closed in the 1950's and Durham Elvet which was also closed in the 1950's.
