The station lies on the West Coast Main Line, which connects London to the West Midlands, the North West, North Wales and the Central Belt of Scotland, and is between the stations of Bletchley and Wolverton. The station has a staffed ticket office and passengers are also able to collect tickets purchased in advance (for example, on the internet) from one of the automatic ticket machines located in the station.

The station was opened in 1982 to serve the new town of Milton Keynes. Before it opened, Bletchley was the nearest station served by British Rail InterCity services.

Facilities at the station include ATM's, pay phones, a cafe, shops and public toilets. Passengers should note that baby changing facilities are not available at the station.

Passenger services calling at the station are operated by London Midland, Virgin Trains and Southern. Between them they offer destinations that includes Birmingham New Street, Crewe, London Euston, Watford Junction, Leighton Buzzard, Cheddington, Tring, Manchester Piccadilly, Chester, Liverpool Lime Street and Brighton.

From 2019, services will operate over the East West Rail Link westwards via Winslow to Aylesbury, High Wycombe and London Marylebone and to Bicester Town, Oxford and Reading.
