Stockport railway station, operated by Virgin Trains, serves the town of Stockport in Greater Manchester. The station is 8 miles to the south east of Manchester Piccadilly railway station and lies on the West Coast Main Line which connects London to the West Midlands, the North West, North Wales and the Central Belt of Scotland. The station has a staffed ticket office although passengers should note that it is not open in the late evening. Passengers are able to collect tickets purchased in advance (for example, on the internet) from one of the automatic ticket machines located in the station.

The station is high above the valley of the river Mersey in which Stockport lies and is linked to both central Stockport and Edgeley by a pedestrian underpass.

Facilities at the station include ATM's, pay phones, cafe, shops, toilets and baby changing facilities.

Passenger services calling at the station are operated by Arriva Trains Wales, CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains, First TransPennine Express, Northern Rail and Virgin Trains. It is the third busiest interchange station outside London, after Birmingham New Street and Manchester Piccadilly, with almost 3.8 million passengers changing trains at the station annually.
