Facilities at the station include ATM's, pay phones, cafes, shops, toilets and baby changing facilities. The main entrance to the station faces Sheaf Square where passengers can also find a taxi rank.

Passenger services calling at the station are operated by CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains, First TransPennine Express and Northern Rail. Between them passengers are offered services that depart towards London St Pancras, Derby, Leicester, East Midlands Parkway, Norwich, Nottingham, Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Edinburgh Waverley, Newcastle Central, Birmingham New Street, Bristol Temple Meads, Leeds and Lincoln.

The two stations are operationally completely separate, but as they are adjacent, they are regarded as a single complex for interchange purposes.
