Passenger services calling at the station are operated by Arriva Trains Wales, CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains, First TransPennine Express, Northern Rail and Virgin Trains.

In March 2010, Manchester City Council and Network Rail unveiled plans for a 'Cycle Centre' to provide secure facilities, with maintenance and hire services.
