The station is situated in the city centre, on New Station Street, and lies on the Leeds Branch of the East Coast Main Line, and a number of other lines on the rail network. Leeds Interchange, located at the New Station Street exit, provides onward transport connections, by bus, from the station. Further bus stops are located on Neville Street below the station, as well as around City Square outside the station.

The station provides passengers with services to major cities across the UK and also to many regional destinations across Yorkshire. Destinations available include London, Birmingham, Derby, Nottingham, Reading, Bristol, Plymouth, Exeter, Liverpool, Hull, Doncaster, Sheffield and York. The station has a concourse and ticket office area which was redesigned and reopened in mid-2012. The station concourse is where passengers can find the newsagent and a cafe. For general assistance there is a customer information point located on Platform 2 by the concourse, as well as customer service offices on Platform 5 and near the toilets on Platform 2. Platforms 3, 4 and 5 are accessible by means of a passenger footbridge and also by a ramp bridge at the north end of the station.
